So the U-Joint is installed. As is the freshly lubed driveshaft!
Now the car won't start.

I pressure washed the engine yesterday and afterwards, the engine ran fine except under throttle, where it would sputter like it had a blown head gasket.
I thought it'd be fine today after drying out for 24 hours but I guess not.

So I'm swapping in fresh spark plugs right now.
And running a compression test simultaneously.
First three cylinders are 140, 140 & 145.
Let's hope it keeps up like this for the next five cylinders!

After this I'll take a look at ignition if it's still hard to start.

Dry the insid e of the cap then wd40 it if you are going to continue to hose it down
Hah, that's exactly what I just did!
It's amazing how much better a TRUCK  runs when it has a dry distributor cap.

I also used my dremel and polishing things to clean all the contacts inside the cap. Bitch started right up. Faster than it's ever started.

Gave up on the passenger side plugs & compression test for today.
Quickly running out of light and the two back side plugs on the passenger side look like a mega bitch to get to.

Gonna go take a test drive now to see if the slip joint lubing helped or not.

It is neither a truck nor a car, it's just a Bronco, no other tag needs to be added to it.
As for the spark plugs, some are easier to get to from down below or thru the wheel well after you remove the wheel.

Der Clunk, it's gone!

Yeah, lubing the slip joint is something Ford calls for every ~15k miles.
So it's a well known sore-spot on the Bronco forums.
No more clunk. Stop/go or even on/off throttle at speed. It's all smooth!

Truck definitely needs a complete tune-up.
I'm going to have fun with it.

You should get her to help you, it would make the tasks go smoother. :wink2:

I see she recommends filling the new filter with oil before screwing it in. I have seen some other folks recommending this, but I have never done it my life.

I suppose it's another topic that can be debated to death. When starting the engine, the oil light goes out within a second or 2, so I don't believe in the theory of needing to half fill the filters prior to installation.

WTF is a Cow Owling?

I see she recommends filling the new filter with oil before screwing it in. I have seen some other folks recommending this, but I have never done it my life.
I figured she was just talking about smearing some oil on the oil filter gasket.
That's how I was taught to do it and have been doing it that way ever since.
But yeah, I'd share my garage and tools with her.

Maybe it's because you called it a car. Trucks have feelings man.
A friend of mine has a year old Explorer Platinum, or titanium, or whatever the fanciest one is. He always refers to it as his "truck" and it drives me crazy, because it's really just a tall, oddly shaped Taurus. If you don't get AWD, it's front wheel drive, for fuck's sake. It's a nice car, though.

All plugs replaced. The passenger side wasn't bad at all once I had a good look at it. up:
Sometimes it idles fine. Sometimes it's hunting around at idle.
I have much tuneup left to do!

Compression test results:

1) 140
2) 140
3) 150
4) 135

5) 140
6) 140
7) 145
8) 140

I have a 4runner with 4x4, I sometimes call a "truck" which I feel weird about, because it's not a truck. But it's not a car either and using that term feels even worse.

I used to give my coworker so much shit for calling her luxury Acura SUV a "truck", but I'm afraid I'm becoming like her.

What term do I use? I need a ruling on this. It's pretty distressing.

Or would the easiest solution be to simply sell off the 4runner and buy an actual truck?

the actual number matters little, what means more is the comparison among all the cylinders. 10psi across all 8 and id for damn sure just fill it with oil and send it.

It is not a truck. Just call it a 4Runner even if it's a stupid name.

We have a Durango R/T. It has 4 doors, three row seating, and a back hatch. It's good on shitty roads, but it has zero off road capabilities. It's certainly not a truck, or even a sport utility vehicle. I consider it a station wagon. A 4Runner is just a 4Runner, they're their own thing, Just call it that.

You'll be interested to know that since the Cold Keg burned down, the new gay bar is called the Twisted Rooster. But then, you probably already knew that.

One other thing to check is broken/rotted vacuum lines.

I had a Mustang with a fickle idle, mostly taking off from a stop that would cause it to stumble. Vacuum lines was the problem there.

Removed the entire throttle body assembly.
Cleaned it, the IAC & TPS.
Then put it all back together. A pretty easy job.
Sprayed white lithium on the linkage.. that shit went everywhere.

So far so good but it's just idling, doing a relearn cycle.
Won't know for sure till I go for a long drive.
Seems to be fairly random when it suddenly starts idle hunting.

You can see the original body color in the engine compartment.
Green is actually my favorite color. Just,, just not on cars.
So it's almost an omen that my favorite car color scheme has green underneath. :)

First half of test drive was so-so. It never died at idle but it did get wonky a few times.
Second half of test drive (back from the store) was purrfect.

I still have the slightest of clunks. You might not notice it unless you were looking for it?
But there are still two more U-Joints left to be replaced.

Tranny was shifting HARD & fast earlier today during an on-road relearn cycle where it was shifting abnormally higher into the RPM's than usual.
Other than slow to shift into reverse (takes a second longer than I'd like) the tranny seems great. Shift points are back to normal now too.
