So why are 4-stroke dirt bikes badass? Two-strokes ruled...

Working in the industry I've found very few people will bring you a nice dirtbike to fix. The nice dirtbikes are owned by people that fix them themselves.

Most guys get sent packing too if they bring something in with engine problems, along with everything else I always find wrong, surpasses the value of the bike. There isn't money in those type of jobs and I always tell them "this is a good opportunity for you to learn about bikes, fixing this yourself"

I built a stroker 450 Yamaha quad engine for a guy. He brought me a brand new Hotcams stroker/big bore kit, crazybill ported the 5 valve head and I assembled the engine. Made it like a 6 something. A year later he asks me to change it back because the thing keeps breaking motor mounts off the case..... I declined. Thing must have had some serious torque.

I was just riding my '66 Vespa, it doesn't appear to have a power band, just the same rate of increase from idle to when ever you're afraid to rev it higher.

All the new 300s and even the 150FI two strokes are so far advanced from the old fire breathing 2 strokes its crazy.
Most of them have power bands like trials bikes.
I have ridden both the Husky and KTM 300 FI 300 and this weekend a new 250 KTM 6 days.
Smooth tractable power and you don't have any jetting issues.
When I did Costa Rica on a KTM 450exc, for me often I wish I was on a 300. Its all personal preference.
Yes, going back and forth between trial and dirt bike, very similar power delivery, long live 2 strokes

I have also ridden the YZ250X two stroke, which is eye opening because it looks exactly like the standard YZ. It is much more tractable and happy to lug if needed but still pulls well in the mid ....for a two stroke. It has a different head, different pipe, different internal gear ratios, etc etc. I still would not want one. The two stroke powerband sucks , big time, compared to a modern 4 stroke. They are dinosaurs ....hard enduro is their last real domain
IMO the jap bikes including their "enduro" lines are not in same league as their european counterparts.... the cr250r was an awful woods weapon..... peaky powerband, stiff suspenders... great for track jumping though...

Bottom line is in 2020 there is a bike available for what ever your riding style dictates.
I'm of the same opinion as r1racer. Although for the money the Yamaha 250x is a great bike, the european bikes are a few steps up.
Once fuel injection on bikes goes to direct injection, and it will happen, you will see even more two strokes on the trail. That being said, if you are deep in the woods and you have a FI issue your SOL, at least with a carb you can repair it.
One thing not mentioned is fuel mileage. The new FI 2 strokes are pretty close to a four stroke fuel consumption. Even my carbureted 150 did a 120km before it hit reserve, and that is awesome.

I'm thinking the stroker crank had improper counterweighting for the increased reciprocating and rotating masses....I'll bet vibration broke the mounts, not increased engine output...

yeah I bought a couple of these in 02 (first year of last gen CR250)
very light, great handling, engine sucked compared to the 2000 model I had previously.

I had a couple of these in 2002-2003. light, fun....not a fan of the case reed engine, though. The 2000 engine with Keihin carb was much better. Can't say I miss these bikes.....definately do miss my 20's though

great shots whipit.... kinda wish I had some of mine from yz125 days back in my 20's....

many would argue, myself included, that the steel framed 96 was best overall cr250 ever....

shipped this yz426f to a UPS guy in Cali years ago (had lots of hair into my early 30's lol).... she was heavier than a tractor.... fuckin bitch to start.... kicked back too.... good riddance!

Got the forks on the KX450 done this week after blowing a seal last weekend.

Had SFK fork seals installed, new bushings and oil and they set up the air chambers to my weight. Got it all buttoned up and test rode it this evening.

Single track in the AM!!

Couple of those last two pics look like the new YZ450. How do you like it?

When we ride we ride pretty fast at times when out on the trail just because that’s the pace we run. I couldn’t imagine actually racing and being on the ragged edge of crashing all the time. Completely different riding

I like this older one because it is a rare instance where I am getting the holeshot on a Kawasaki. the other Kaw mounted pics are at least 18 months old....all since then have been Yamaha pics. I have hundreds of pics- there are always at least a couple photographers at the races

The Yamaha pics are YZ450FX- the off road version...though both bikes pictured have had YZ450F transmissions swapped in. I hated the wide ratio trans

so do these trails just go all over the place? this is so very different from the east coast woods stuff I do. I have looked at some socal desert racing stuff and was not that interested but your area looks good
Our riding goes from desert to deep forest. Today we rode desert to get to the forest. Some of the single track is so tight that you can go lock to lock on the bars in 15-20 feet. Some of it is more open and like a roller coaster if you ride it fast enough

That's kind of a cool custom. 1985 theme.
my first dirtbike was a 1985 YZ125....now acknowledged as one of the slowest bikes ever. it felt like a rocket to me @ 14 yrs old....with only 4 yrs of slow ATV experience at the time

I love this 1984 themed YZ250 that RacerX did a few years ago

This thread makes me want a dirt bike again. I have't had one in 10-12 years now. :frown2:

My friendly neighbors down the road that just bought another 200 acres with trails all through it is also helping the urge.

Neighbor across the street is selling this 2015 with 32 hours on for $5500. I told him where was this two weeks ago when I was looking.

He has 4 dirt bikes in his garage and all are immaculate. Looks like a super clean bike.4EE83C38-C879-41CE-998F-519C98E12531.jpeg60FF2078-9C37-4677-8A32-A508E1B9564F.jpeg
