How's my brother doing?

Was on my way home tonight and had a call from a number I did not recognize. I thought it might be from work so I answered it. It was the Iroquois County coroner informing me that my brother passed away this afternoon on the way to the hospital. Last time I talked to him we were talking about looking forward to retirement. He was 64 and retiring at 65. He and I spoke about once a month. For us that was real good. Before Dad passed 10 years ago we hadn't spoken to each other for 35 years.

Funny, 3 hours ago the biggest thing I was worrying about was if I was going to get released to go back to work Friday. My how things can change.

Unlike Ro$$, my brother was a hard working motherfucker. The Grim Reaper got him way too early.

Thank you everyone, this certainly has been a shock.

Autopsy will be done in the morning, I will know for sure then.

The coroner told me my brother dialed 911 this afternoon complaining of shortness of breath. Ambulance got him and he seemed to be doing ok. He then suffered a heart attack and they couldn't revive him. I found out tonight he'd been fighting an infection in 1 lung from dust or mold. (He's worked in a grain elevator for 35 years) He had gone back to work Monday but had called off today. They swabbed him for Covid, but the doctor didn't think it would be positive. I will have results tomorrow.

This fucking sucks to hear man. I'm so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, I know all to well exactly what you're going through. I known that there are no words that can really comfort you right now, but know your LAB's family here for you.

Godspeed to your brother.

Damn that sucks. I can't imagine losing a brother. Good that you guys reconnected and sorry to hear about him checking out at such a young age. Why didn't you speak for 30+ years? Lost my stepdad last Sunday. Too much of this shit going around lately.

Damn it, that’s a shock filled moment on the phone I’m sure. One day your just doing your thing and the next day it’s over. Man I’m real sorry you lost family, tough shit to digest.

as we get older, a lot of us at this point of our life’s never really had exposure to losing someone...something we have to get used to.

Thank you again everyone. I'm still in shock. I'm pretty much the only family left, so I am going through the process of claiming the body, etc.. As part of our state lockdown, no services are permitted, but I don't think he would mind.

Not to air too much dirty laundry, but he and I didn't speak for so long we didn't even know why. After Dad passed we started talking a little. When Mom passed 8 months later we finally sat down and figured out our Mom had split us up. She was a bitter, vindictive woman.

Dale was divorced. He has a 19y/o son who nobody has seen for almost a year, but that's a tale for another time.

Man, that sucks Hugh G. RIP dude.
Your brother works his whole life, just aboot to retire, and... that's it, game over.
Happened to a friend of mind a few years ago. He had big plans, dying wasn't one of them.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. I knew a guy who did 30+ years at GM, retired and died of a heart attack before he received his first pension payment. Sometimes life is a god damn cruel comedy. Stay strong.

Sorry to hear about this Hugh, but glad you and he finally got to sit down and clear the air.

My brother and I haven't spoken for 10 years, and it doesn't bother me as much as it does my wife.

I can deal with it because mine is more like Ross than your Bro...

I'm sorry for your loss, but at least you guys had been back in touch after a long estrangement- it's easy to let people slip away, and then we tend to feel badly about it- it's good you guys had a relationship at the end.

This.

I’m sure he was appreciative he could reunite with his brother. Sorry for your loss.

My condolences. Is it too late to swap him for ysr_racer ysr_racer ??
I have to admit, this made me chuckle. I needed that.

Thanks again for the thoughts, prayers, and stories. I spent the afternoon at the funeral home making arrangements. I am drained.

Got the autopsy report. Official cause of death was pulmonary embolism with a side order of congestive heart failure. CHF runs in the family from both sides. Wheeee!

This is the exact reason I started travelling a few years ago. Between travelling and racing I at least get out and see the world.

I'm fairly certain my brother hadn't taken a vacation in 40 years. We can always make more money, we can never make more time.
