DIY method to create a good dimple for chain rivet?

I bought that damn $12 Harbor Freight chain breaker that is all over youtube being advertised as a good chain rivet tool.
Well, yeah it would work great if it could give me a nice freakin dimple to mushroom the rivet in place. But it's not. These DID ZVMX chain pins are tough as nails and it's just laughing at this harbor freight tool.
I'm thinking of substituting the harbor freight tools pin with a BB or tiny ball bearing. Think that would work okay as a quick fix to create a good dimple asap (as in tomorrow when I go buy it)?
And where the heck do you get tiny ball bearings at in a small town?

I know, you're going to tell me to go buy the correct tool. Well fuck you and your correct tool. :screama:

Well, the rivets are on there *okay* so I guess I could just ride the bike to some random shop and give 'em a couple bucks to finish the rivets. Make 'em perfect.

Fuck it CZE, just ride your bike with your half assed assembled chain. NO Worries. You saved a bunch on the HF tool! No doubt it was made specially to assemble cheap ass Chinese chains. Maybe you can also find a cheap helmet to wear that's missing the chin strap to go with your HF assembled chain. Cheap mechanic-ing is always a good idea until you need to count on the result. Anything special you want said in your Obit?

Find a dude with the right tool and bribe him with a case of beer to do it.

I'm terrified the chain will let go at speed and lock up the rear or take my leg clean off, but then again, I'm a gigantic pussy, so take it with a grain of salt.

also when you do mushroom the master pins be sure to have a piece of wire or paper clip between the plate and link to insure you don't get it overtightened, some supply a clip and some don't

easiest way to ruin a new kit is to over tighten the master

It does not take much to mushroom the copper tip on the masterlink. Your dollar saving hf tool probably did enough to get it to some guy whos not a cheap ass and has the right tool.

Thanks guys, there were good suggestions in this thread. So I'll tell you guys what I did and show a pic to see if it's "good enough", which I'm guessing it is?

First, I went to my local sport store and bought a $3 packet of steel 1/4" sling shot ball bearings. Then I fitted on onto the end of the Harbor Freight tool. Scotch tape will keep the bearing in place/still till you get it started with one or two twists of the wrench. Then just gave it a few twists and voila, it's what consider to be a decent flare? Can you experts chime in on the pic?

Left rivet = ball bearing flare
Middle rivet = harbor freight tool only
right rivet = stock, ignore it



Btw, this process absolutely DESTROYED the ball bearing. :D
Steel just wasn't strong enough in ball bearings for anything more than a one-time use.
But it'll do until I can afford to buy a proper chain tool, whenever this current chain wears out.

I'm sick as a dog, just got back from a mini-vacation.
I'll hafta wait a few days before I can finish and put the chain on and make sure there are no kinks.
I just wanted to make sure the ball bearing would work.

If. and it's a big IF I needed to peen over a rivet link, I'd use two hammers. I'd put my large 16oz ball peen hammer on the back side of the ling and peen the outside over with my smaller ball peen hammer. You don't have to wail the shit out of it, it just needs enough to keep the plate from falling off. And don't break the edges off or split them.

Back in the days of yore, I would weld clip on link plate on, instead of relying on the clip.
