From a guy in one of my other forums:

"I'd bet a sandwich that this is an old tool for reloading shotgun shells. My guess is that the "pie slots" are for pre-measured amounts of shot or powder. The cylinders with the indentions in them look a lot like the pattern on the end of a shotgun shell. These might be for pre-forming those folds. Newfangled equipment is different, but I'm almost positive it has to do with shotgun shell reloading.

Given the title on the book behind it, that would seem to be at least a possibility..."

Maybe a nozzle for a flamethrower or something?

I'm thinking it's fire and airflow related, not firearms.

My guess as a firearm would be some sort of platform for grenade or mortar launching.

I'm amazed that this item has stumped the LAB's collective for 4 days now.

Here's some replies from my Harley Board:

1. funnel chamber for a Dyson vacuum cleaner.

2. Looks like some kind of die for an extrusion machine. The welds holding the 10 small cylinders don't look to be substantial enough to hold up under pressure.

Would make one hell of a coffee filter housing.

3. it's a marital aid....

4. I would like to know if there is anything in common with the WWII or Korea vintage Auto-Ordnance manual behind it. Could be a heat sink for a chain gun.

5. Looks like a wheel cover, like from the center of a fancy hubcap.

6. A Muffler Baffle? Possibly an exhaust multi-port?

Just like this place, some decent guesses sprinkled with comedy...

One of the best things you can do is put something like this out on your table at a swap meet with a sign that says "What is it?"

thats entertainment allllllll day long. And you'll get people coming by JUST to see your "thing" and take a guess.

Cool cookie cutter.

Re: Anyone know what this thing is? LABUSAS IS STILL STUMPED*

so do YOU know what it is? Or do you assume everyone is wrong? I still have no clue but my guess would be some type of flame thrower part or thruster for air flow.

I was leaning towards an ANTITANK, ATM-7 inside piece, (Australian antitank mine) that funnels charge rounds, but it's not that...

I think it's some sort of rotatory exhaust as others have said... not a shotgun mold since it's welded to base..

Something food related....that's the direction I'm thinking.

What about the output schnozzle for a pasta machine? Are there any star shaped pasta dealios out there? Maybe the center part shoots out lasagna noodles?

Or maybe I'm just hungry and need to eat dinner before coming up with any new ingenious ideas.

MAE

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
That means it could be part of a machine gun system on an airplane?

While I totally agree that airflow is involved, it is my opinion the air flow is to cool the machine gun.

It may have been for a prototype that never worked and thus the lack of information.

All I can divulge without getting in trouble is that MAE stands for Missile Assembly Equipment and it is a component of a small rocket.

true... in a fuel pump they dont... engine yes.

Dont know though... all the rocketry I do is solid fuel... so liquid stuff is a mystery.

Re: Anyone know what this thing is? LABUSAS IS STILL STUMPED*

from a rocket expert in Wyoming:

I'm fairly sure it has nothing to do with rockets. It is the wrong shape and wrong material for one thing. I'm fairly familiar with rocket engines from the V2 to modern day and it just doesn't fit anything in that category.

It looks like a high temperature steel like stainless steel or even a special high temperature alloy used in aircraft engines. I used to work for Pratt & Whitney aircraft designing combustors and it looks like that type of material. That started me thinking more about the shape and the letters MAE 213 on the side. The MAE 213 is obviously been roughly hand scribed on the side due to the unevenness and size of the letters.

After looking at the shape I have a GUESS on what it might be. I believe it might be a flame holder that goes inside a ramjet engine. I think the MAE 213 stands for Marquardt Aircraft Experimental 213. I would guess this was used in an experimental ramjet engine and this was flame holder design 213. In the old days, it was only possible to see how these things would work by experimentation. Today, we do it with computers, but in those days you had to build and test it to see how it would work. Even when I worked for Pratt & Whitney in the 1970's we had to build and test as the computers then could not do the job of simulating the flow inside combustors. We tested many combustor designs and they were all number and hand labeled like the one in the picture.

That is my best guess. Of course, I could be completely wrong and it was just a fancy ashtray for a general. Who knows?
