It looks like it would expand the shells before reloading.

Re: Anyone know what this thing is ??

Found at the gun show.

I overheard the Lt. Col. WW2 veteran/military collector who was selling said he would pay someone if they could tell him what it was. It came from a military junk collectors gun vault when he passed away. I was curious so I snapped those pics. I figured surely someone on Labusas would be able to identify it.

Re: Anyone know what this thing is ??

Wretch/Nightryder, I don't think its a crimper. There's no taper...besides, theres too many stations with the exact same design.

If it were for reloading, wouldn't each one of those cyl. have a diff. function? Lead shot, wad, sizing, powder, crimp, etc.??

The book is there, partially obscured, but I'd suspect if NOZIP could read, the answer would be in the book.

It is certainly some sort of loading or reloading device...
...since you can see where something has either been pushed up or down throught the middle.

Re: Anyone know what this thing is ??

snail the auto ordinance book you see in the backround is unrelated to this item. It's just in the backround.

I took the pic of this thing while it was sitting on a table at the gun show, with other items around..

Re: Anyone know what this thing is ??

the botom of it is mounted to the round piece of wood. I thought it was a "cookie cutter" of some sort, possibly used in a press to cut patches maybe used for uniforms? who knows?

Re: Anyone know what this thing is ??

I don't think its a sizing die. How would it work with the top being smaller than the main chamber? Please explain how you could extract the sized shell casing with that configuration?

It does look like a punch...I'm leaning toward a wad cutter....

I see no uniform wear if it's been used to die cut with.

Shotshell forming like gyeagel is saying?

Okay, it's part of a civil war Gatlin gun then...
...maybe part of the extractor system.

My thought also.

However, it looks like the cooling system for it, the barrels would go thru them. Or possibly cool the drum if it had one.

Doubtfull.. the guy who owns it also owns a working cival war gatling gun.. We shot it at the last shoot.

My buddy also has a few gatling guns, including a 2'' bore revolving hotchkiss cannon. Between the two of them, they would know if it went to a gatling gun or not.

Looks like a cooling shroud that fits on a turret.

The directed venting is definitely for cooling and if it's firearm related that is what it has got to be.

Inside those drums is where I would say something like that would go. however, those drums are magazines. And the machine gun is about 100 years newer than what I would expect to see that part come from.

That thing looks a little familiar, maybe a variation of the Puckle pre-load cylinder

I would expect to see something like that in an aft facing machine gun for aircraft. If not aircraft then it also has an accompanying fan to blow air through the machine.

Prototype as well. 30s-50s?

The zeppelins carried machine guns.

That's not gun related.

It's a flue or fuel-gas manifold. Note how the surrounding tubes are connected to the main central tube.

I'm betting it's a fuel mixing whatchamacallit for a heater thingy.

Re: Anyone know what this thing is? LABUSAS IS STUMPED*

No way to be a die, walls are way too thin.
Not a heat sink, the design is wrong....there would be rows of fins to increase surface area.

I think Engage and Simon are on the right track..fuel/flame related.

How about the inside nozzle part for a flame thrower.....the part that would shape and mix the air and the combustible fuel?

Re: Anyone know what this thing is? LABUSAS IS STUMPED*

I do recall some early turbine engine exhaust having a single similar shape
as one of the smaller outer tubes only larger on the DeHavilin Comets?

Maybe a Vickers jet or early version on the Boeing 707?

Not sure how this thing could be related unless someone was building a giant scale model.

The attached wood makes me think it's either for display as whatever it is or it is a tool...
...maybe for holding/turning the Gatlin gun barrels.
