We get plenty of stories how the motorcycle malfunctioned and caused a crash. Fucking idiots.

Classic target fixation. Listen to him talk- he doesn't even know how to turn a motorcycle. He thinks you make the motorcycle turn by leaning. Epic...

I get so tired of hearing that one- typically uttered by old, fat Harley owners who refuse to learn how to ride.

They have no idea what holds a motorcycle up, they have no idea what they did to cause the motorcycle to fall down (they stomped the rear brake and locked up the rear wheel), and they make up the "Had to lay her down" story afterwards to try to explain it away.

As if fringed black ass-less pleather chaps and Chinese plastic chrome-plated skull ornaments offered better steering and braking than a rubber tire attached to disc brakes.

    Dumbasses...

Most of the chumps that come into the junkyard will wear the rear pads down to the backing plate, the fronts don't even look new.
More than half of them come in with a front brake lever with the pivot semi seized and it feels like a ratchet, un-fucking usable!
I've had asshole tell me to take their "baby" for a ride, sometimes I'll get as far as the street before I ride it back and lube the lever right the fuck in front of them. I'll also ask them how they were riding it like that.
And then there's steering head bearings... mother fuckers don't have a clue, don't notice that it feels like you're riding on ice. IDIOTS!

Yep, rider training should be a prerequisite to obtaining a driver's license, including track days.

Having said that, it should apply to all license classes really.

Sure did, it locked up solid between the rider's brain and his physical connection to the handlebars.

Yup. Looks like an on-bike video of the crash depicted in Keith Code's TOTW II video. The guy target fixated, panicked, stood it up, failed to steer effectively, locked up on the bars, failed to brake, and went off a cliff.

He needs to learn how to ride.

I've ridden tens of thousands of motorcycles, many were death traps, some you'd be embarrassed to haul to the scrapyard, never have I had the steering lock.

Some fuck put his disc lock on his Harley and didn't bother to tell me. I got on it and made almost one complete revolution of the front wheel before it slammed me on the fucking ground! Fucked up the whole right side of the motorcycle.

    Yup.

Motorcycles self-correct. If the steering HAD somehow magically just spontaneously gone from working perfectly to locked, the motorcycle would have just fallen over- he went off the cliff upright.

Believe it or not, I did have the steering kinda lock.

    Mid 90's Husaberg FE 600.

Got tossed at a pretty good clip in a rocky wash.

    Landed hard on my hip.

After picking myself and the bike up, I couldn't turn the bars to one side.

The FE had a steering stem lock, the clutch cable had jammed between the lock and the fork.

I ground that motherfucking lock off when I was able to walk again.

It was one of those injuries where I made it home, but within hours I was an invalid...lol!!

If he had a GoPro tank mounted then it's plausible that some wire or other stuff he had mounted, may have caught the clip-ons or something.
Just long enough to freak him out and create the target fixation.

Based on his corner speed and lean angle from the prior corner, he wasn't a total riding newb.

Steering "locked up" may just be his ignorance of what really happened that may have prevented him from doing what he wanted to do.

    "Should have laid it down".

    Is that even possible?
If you have time to purposely lay the bike down, then you've got time to recover from the situation.

Every lowside I've ever had was a situation where BAM, I'm on the ground before I have time to think "oh shit".

I started thinking about steering lock when I got my CBR1000RR which has the HESD (Honda Electronic Steering Damper)

In the back of my mind I wondered what are the chances of a 'software' glitch locking the steering...

I feel more comfortable with a mechanical steering damper, not so much with electronic...

I've never had a bike fancy enough to have electronic suspension/braking stuffs.
Is it mechanically possible for a software glitch to fuck up the "steering"??
I can see it maybe making the steering loose if it stops stiffening the steering dampener maybe?
But locking it up? Tell me that's not possible.

ok but did you take a look at the unit controling the damper? Electronically controlled suspension is the shit because
you can dial each corner in. Overlay the settings with a GPS map...

no. The honda system is shit anyways and usually bypassed. Electronic suspension is cool though.

Electronics/firmware/software is adding on another layer of complexity and therefore exaggerating the consequences of failure.

sure but the damper/shocks will still work "mechanically" but maybe not "optimally" without some kinda management. Of course if you had Prius floor matts on your bike, who knows what can happen!

The 'floor mat' debacle was most prevalent in the Lexus models, IIRC

Has anyone considered just how much you turn the bars in a corner such as the one puss-puss got into? Maybe 2~4 degrees, if that. It takes very little steering input at speed to make a curve like that.

Yup. It takes very little steering input for almost any turn. A standard part of race bike prep is to extend the steering stops, to limit the maximum steering angle, to reduce the amplitude of any tank-slappers that may happen. The only time you need as much steering angle as stock motorcycles come with, is not even for when you're riding- it's for maneuvering into and out of parking spaces.

Racing organizations have had to come up with the definition of a crash, to clear up such things.

A common definition is "Unintentionally coming to a stop in a position other than upright.".

in the SE its "If your bar touches the ground, thats a crash and must be re-teched in order to have subsequent laps counted". If you re-enter the course before a corner worker can assess safety conditions... (well you dont want to do that!)

My brief stint in endurance racing... it was hilarious how many guys would sacrifice their body to keep the bar from hitting the ground or to save crash damage from the teams bike.

I covered an accident once where the rider on a cruiser thought a car on a side street was going to run a stop sign/pull out in front of him. The car stopped, past the sign and into the road a bit, but the rider had by that time just bailed the fuck off the bike. Like, don't bother with braking or turning, just stand up and jump off towards the ditch. This was in a residential 30 mph area. The bike continued on, riderless, chugging to a stop and tipping over on someone's front lawn about 100 yards down the road. No damage to speak of. Rider wasn't injured. Odd.

I saw a nit wit do a Chinese wheelie on the street right in front of me! I knew he was going to crash, but I didn't expect him the lock the front brake and flip over!
He was driving down the road at the speed limit when a car looked like it was going to pull out in front of him, I thought he would auger into it, nope, he flipped it, didn't even hit the car.

Exactly. And as a race official, having to argue with some guy about whether his incident was a crash or not, got kinda silly at times. If you've got grass stuck between your belly pan and your upper, I'm gonna go with what the corner workers told me.
