Thread: CHP's new motorcycle- Harley wins the bid

  1. Default CHP's new motorcycle- Harley wins the bid

Yep. No other brand bothered to bid, so Oakland Harley Davidson won the bid for 350 bikes. They still need to qualify the bike, may be tough with only 103mph top speed as reported...we'll see.

But I'm also relived you guys in Cali won't have to worry about CHP chasing you down with 1400 Connies....

    Well, police motorcycles.

Now it seems the SWAT teams are there for everything beyond littering.

nearly $28k for that shitbox?? A brand new concours is $15kish at retail... and its legions ahead of the Harley. Damn California cant even do simple fucking math. I bet you can buy 2 connies for the same single $28k for the hog, even through a local dealer.

Shit... even a base gold wing is cheaper & better

Yeah, I noticed that in your OP, but I wondered why? Can the Honda and Kaw and BMW factories be running so close to full capacity that they can't squeeze in another 350 bikes?

not sure how it works in Oakland... but most municipalities have exclusive dealers that can only make X% on the sale.
I guess you can solicit bids but Ive never seen a "fair" solicitation that didn't require at least 3 offers.
Here is where the "arrogance" of Gov't comes in. And we're not even getting into the operating costs of these units... which judging by the $5k warranty package per bike is a gold mine for the dealer or $1,750,000 JUST FOR SERVICE. I bet that doesnt include tires, brakes, or oil.

Anyone who thinks motorcycle police actually chase people who run has been watching too many episodes of CHIPs. They're used for lots of things, but pursuit is not one (or at least shouldn't be) of them.

Honda has never been keen on getting the CHP business- a (till this) low margin/high maintenance customer. The ST1300 doesn't meet the CHP's GVW requirement and Honda chooses to not spend the bucks to up the weight.

Kawi issued "stop-sell" orders on the 14's last year- the electrical system failed on several police bikes, possibly making the bike stop running unexpectedly (as when leaned over in a turn).

BMW didn't bid for a variety of reasons I think, the politically correct one is the state added the extended service provision at the 11th hour, BMW asked for a week or two extension on the bid deadline so it could properly do the math, the state said "no".

When I had part ownership of a m/c shop. The RCMP deliivered the modified Kawasaki bikes. Man they weighed a ruddy ton. According to one of them they are to be supplied HD which will be so much heavier. He is not plased with that as a future m/c cop.

    So true.

The main duty is traffic control, accidents and a boat load of escorts.

The Harleys look good but don't go, turn or stop for shit. If you try and lean into any type of turn over 45 you're either dragging the boards or you get a serious wallow effect.

Both equally F'd up but the wallow deal usually doesn't happen until your at least 75 or better in a semi decent curve. The wallow will make you rethink your whole riding style.

It's like an a serious tank slapper in slow motion. One of the craziest thing I've ever experienced on a bike.

I knew a lot of LAPD motorcops growing up in the 70's... they all begged for the Kawasakis.

One cop used to keep his motor in our garage and then take his cage to his home in Acton (Mitch's town) to save himself about 30 miles roundtrip of cold riding.

Showed him how to do a burn out with his sled.......he wasn't amused.

The hilarious part is when they retired, the fuckers would buy harleys....go figure.

CHP motorcops are retiring the 1200cc BMW's. They are replacing with 1400cc Connies. THEY ARE GOVERNED TO 135MPH. This is within the "border division".

Did you know you gotta split a BMW in half to service the clutch? Bloody stupid design. 20 shop hours to r & r a clutch.

The cop bike we have been seeing along with others wonder who rides in the rear seat, reminds me of the City Police in Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba had a number of side-car units. Never saw another officer in one, for they all countod on being in a Cage.
